Lions narrowly miss out in superb game

In January 1973, the Barbarians, in a game against the All Blacks, scored what is widely acknowledged as the greatest try of all time.

On February 21st 2016, Aireborough Lions u11s scored what will go down in folk lore as the second greatest try of all time.

Local rivals Yarnbury had trounced Aireborough in their last meeting but there was an air of quiet confidence about the Lions on this muddy morning.

Aire flew out of the blocks in the first half quickly stamping their authority. Every single player made a huge contribution, including new recruit Sam.

'The' try is something of a blur, but it started with Aireborough securing the ball at a ruck and then possibly a driving maul centred around who else but Johnny. A further ruck was won and then the ball went quickly through many pairs of Aireborough hands with Isaac passing to and then receiving the ball back from Alex to finish a wonderful team try to rapturous applause from parents and coaches.

Aireborough were one try up at half time, but Yarnbury pulled out the big guns for the second half. Some lovely rugby from both teams ensued, with only a couple of lapses of concentration in the Lions defence allowing the visitors to edge the game out 7-5.

There were many great individual performances but what impressed most was a sense of the whole team playing for each other and really enjoying the game.

If Aire can carry this forward the game at Bradford Salam should be highly rewarding.
