Aire spring into life after poor start

Aire 15 v Pontefract 5

On Mothering Sunday the lads were hoping to provide mums with a money can't buy win against very tough opposition.

Aire got off to a disastrous start when Ponte fielded the KO and rampaged up field with menace and purpose. Aire's defence was still in the changing room and Ponte capitalised on soft tackling to score a early try to make it 0-7.

Aire were stunned, but were rallied by skipper Johnny Ivory who laid down his expectations in no uncertain terms. Ponte snaffled the re-start and used their big ball carriers t good effect to make inroads into Aire territory; however the likes of Haydon Pickett, Eddie Farnell & Calum Diamond put n some solid tackles to slow down Ponte's attack.

Aire finally managed to get hold of the pill and a smart kick by stand off Harvey Sellers was chased down by the three quarters. Ponte were under pressure and the relieving kick was charged down by Harvey and Sammy Woodley reacted quickest to score under the sticks. The conversion though was a howler, meaning Aire trailed by 2 points.

Stand in centre Ethan Heede caught the KO and rampaged down field showing pace, aggression and power. The ball was recycled and another kick behind was hunted down and Aire seized possession. The ball broke left and Calum Diamond broke the defensive line, but was hauled down 2m short. In form Tommy Rollinson was on hand to scoop up the offload and score a try in the corner to take it 10-5.

Aire's tails were up and again they turned Ponte and found themselves with good field position. Ponte were awarded a scrum 5m from their line, but Aire's wolf pack hunted the ball and strong defence led to the Ponte player being carried over. Aire had the nudge in the scrum and Joe Priestley picked up from no8 and burst toward the Ponte line. The Ponte back row tried in vain to thwart the run, but JP just had too much strength and clattered over to take it 15-5

This was to the last play due to shoulder injury to Ponte's skipper whilst trying to tackle JP and the game was stopped. Thankfully the injury was not as serious as first thought and was given the all clear at hospital.

Aire lads were disappointed as they were building momentum; however they understand that player welfare is paramount and all frpm Aire hope for a speedy recovery.

Aire face South Leicester on Saturday 6th April at Otley RUFC 12KO, which is the curtain raiser to the 1st team match
