Battle of the 'Balds'

Aireborough claimed their first home win of the season and moved above Sheffield Medicals after beating the South Yorkshire side 19-0 at Nunroyd Park on Saturday.

Two tries in the first half were followed by a third score after the break, while the Wolfpack's solid defence throughout earned them a first clean sheet in Yorkshire Division Three this term.

After a scrappy opening to the contest, it was the visitors who settled best. From a lineout, they were held up close to the line after an attacker made a darting run, before a drop goal attempt sailed wide of the posts.

Aire grew into the game, and after forcing Sheffield to kick long twice from their own 22m, they almost made the pressure pay.

Full-back Harley Stevenson-Cocks received the ball on the left wing and almost touched down in the corner, but was dragged into touch well by a Sheffield defender.

The hosts' tails were up, and they took the lead through Mikey Dolan, who fended off three challenges well to get over next to the sticks, with Nick Holdsworth adding the extras.

Holdsworth was involved again shortly after, when his penalty kick attempt went wide.

Aireborough continued to threaten the left flank and it paid off when Jonny Mackey scored in the corner to make it 12-0, but Holdsworth was wide again.

The chance of a third first-half try came and went as, down the left again, substitute Lewis Myers' pass found touch instead of Stevenson-Cocks.

Sheffield came out in the second half and strung several attacks together, but a mixture of individual errors and poor passing hampered their chances of scoring.

Aireborough also won the visitors' lineout on a couple of occasions, and took advantage with their third try that sealed victory.

Moving the ball down the right-hand side, Simon Hill got the ball down under a heap of tacklers, before Holdsworth made it 19-0 with the boot.

Following the third try, Aireborough saw the game out for a second win in a row that lifts them into 11th, while Sheffield drop to 12th.

It was a tough call for Head Coach Si Davies' Man of the Match, as both Jonny Mackey and Nick Jackson gave a 'hair-raising' performance on the pitch, but in the end it was Jonny Mackey who wore the crown.

Next weekend, Aireborough host Thornensians while Sheffield are also at home to Skipton.
