? In Summary

The 2026 Nations Championship is rugby’s new global north vs south competition, blending the mid-year international series with a major finals weekend. Twickenham becomes a central stage in November 2026 with exciting fixtures including England vs Australia, Japan, and New Zealand — and a dramatic three-day Finals Weekend to crown the inaugural champions. It will be played every 2 years outside of RWC and Lions years.

What is the Rugby Nations Championship?

The Nations Championship is a brand-new international rugby union tournament launching in 2026. It’s designed to be the flagship global competition outside the Rugby World Cup, pitting the top northern hemisphere teams (the Six Nations sides) against the top southern hemisphere teams (the SANZAAR nations plus Japan and Fiji) in meaningful cross-hemisphere Test matches.

? How It Works

12 Teams compete: England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, France, Italy (Six Nations), and Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Argentina, Japan, Fiji (Southern Hemisphere).

The tournament is split across two international windows:

July 2026: Northern teams travel south to play three matches.

November 2026: Southern teams travel north for three more fixtures.

Pool standings across these six matches determine matchups for the Finals Weekend.

Finals Weekend (Twickenham, London) features six double-header games between similarly ranked northern vs southern teams — including the overall Championship Final.

This new format replaces traditional autumn tours with a structured competition that gives every match tournament significance.
