Bramley started well and it was ten minutes before Aire managed to get into the Bramley half but forward pressure produced a try for second rower Mark Howorth converted by Nick Holdsworth. Further struck pressure resulted in a penalty by Holdsworth and Aire had a ten point lead. Bramley, however, came back into the game and scored two well taken tries, one converted to take the lead. A Holdsworth penalty gave the lead back to Aire but then disaster struck. Aires scrum half Ollie Catherall went to the ground clutching his ankle. Luckily two of the Bramley members were medically trained and were able to keep him comfortable until the ambulance arrived (Ollie and the Aireborough committee would like to thank them for their sporting actions). It was agreed to end the first half at this stage, giving Aire a slender one point lead at the interval.
Aire extended their lead early in the second half when winger Stu Williams held on to an attempted kick over his head to break the defence and score. The next twenty minutes were all Bramley and three tries, one converted, saw them take a 29-18 lead. Aire replied with Chris Blackshaw try, converted by Holdsworth, to get them within four points of the home team. As has happened before this season a late try by the opposition saw Aire not only lose the game but also the losing bonus point they deserved.
Aire would like to send their best wishes to Ollie for a speedy recovery, at least the plate and the screws in his leg will give him the extra weight he has always wanted.
Aire entertain Burley in the league next Saturday.
