After dinner treat for ex-players

Both teams provided an entertaining desert to the meal but the exciting see-saw nature of the game did little for the digestive system. Both sides produced some good open rugby and Aire efforts were rewarded with a bonus point win.
Aire started well but the Grovian defence held firm and it was only after ten minutes that Aire opened the scoring with a Nick Holdsworth penalty. Further pressure five minutes later saw Holdsworth give an inside ball to captain and hooker Nick Jackson who scampered over the line for Holdsworth to add the conversion. Grovians now exerted the pressure and in almost a copy of what Aire had done and came away with a penalty and then scored a converted try to put the scores level after twenty five minutes. Grovian pressure gave them a penalty but Aire hit back with some fine forward play leading to a well taken try by back rower James Exley, converted by Holdsworth. From the restart Aire found themselves on the back foot with the visitors moving the ball along the line for a converted try. With half time approaching the Aire forwards once again exerted the pressure, producing a try for Jonny Mackey. Half –time and a 22-20 lead for Aire after an entertaining first half.
Whilst the second half did not produce the points of the first half, the spectators were treated to some tight exchanges the only score of the half being when Aires full-back Tony Clitheroe took a ball in his own half outpacing the Grovians cover to kick ahead for winger Gareth Poole to score in the corner.
Aire travel to Old Modernians in the league next Saturday.
