A warm welcome from all at Aireborough RUFC to Andrew Wood, aka Woody

We are delighted to announce that Andrew Wood (Woody) was successfully nominated as our new Age Grade Chairman in the recent Annual General Meeting, following resignation from long standing member, Matt Smith.

Woody has been a member of Aireborough RUFC since the 1995/6 season, playing senior rugby for fifteen seasons and appearing in occasional games for 5 years after until finally retiring in 2015.

During his time as a player, Woody played at a variety of levels, captaining the second team for two seasons, the third team for two seasons and spending a brief period captaining the Vets before they hung up their boots up.

Following retirement from playing Woody spent eight seasons as senior fixtures secretary before gradually merging into the junior section when his eldest offspring reached playing age. Here he became head coach of the then micros team, now under 8s team, and more recently, the junior and minis fixtures secretary.

Away from the club, Woody is a freelance Chartered Mechanical Engineer by day, and partakes in hobbies such as squash, socialising and protracted garage based projects by night.

As Chairman, Woody’s aims are to maintain and develop what we already have and to enhance our reputation as a friendly, welcoming junior section.

The social side of rugby is incredibly important in terms of player/parent enjoyment and participation and, whilst we already have regular highly successful events, there is so much more scope in this area.

Woody already has plans to use the club on Friday evenings to deliver a brand new social event that will include the whole club.

In addition, several age grade teams will be going on tour together in May for the first time, which is great.

There is also a great opportunity to better integrate ourselves with the senior section through joint ventures, and as 2020 is the 50th anniversary of the club, Woody's intention is to organise appropriate events to celebrate this milestone.

Of course, this all sounds fantastic, but the reality is that it requires people to step forward to help make it happen, even if in the smallest of ways.

So, why not join us in celebrating Woody's appointment by signing up to help out next season.
